In a bid to boost the property market during the coronavirus pandemic, the Government removed the need to pay stamp duty on certain properties and buyers didn’t have to pay stamp duty on the first £500,000 of their purchase price. From the start of July 2021, the stamp duty holiday has started to be phased out to pre pandemic levels with a full return on 1st October 2021.
The stamp duty holiday has certainly created an extremely busy period at John M Lewis with a large number of completions taking place throughout the year and especially so before the end of June deadline to allow as many clients as possible to enjoy the full benefit of the discounted rate. This period has certainly not been without its challenges especially having to adapt to new procedures due to Covid 19. Through our determination, the support and understanding of our clients we have continued to experience success and now that things are ending, it gives us the opportunity to reflect on the past year.
Liz Knott comments “On reflection, the past year has been challenging but we have got through it and we continue to strive to offer a good service no matter what the challenges are. We look forward to welcoming all clients old and new back into the office when Covid Restrictions allow.”
Jo joined the team at John M Lewis in January 2018 as a
Legal Executive and we now welcome her as Associate.
Jo started conveyancing life as a secretary and qualified in 2010 after studying with the Institute of Legal Executives. Originally from Stoke, Jo actually had her first job after finishing school as a civil servant working for the courts and has since moved around the country working for a number of legal firms. With over 20 years experience in conveyancing Jo moved to Derby in 2005.
Jo actually fell into conveyancing as she saw a job for a ‘Property
Assistant’ and applied, having no previous experience. She realised it was
working for a solicitors firm and having been successful at interview really
loved the work. When asked what she would do instead of conveyancing, Jo once
had thoughts about being an air traffic controller or an accountant. We think
she is much better at conveyancing!
Jo classes herself as a morning person and often arrives
early to work to concentrate on any particularly complicated cases, proving her
dedication to her role and our clients. Jo prides herself on working closely
with not just clients, but also local estate agents where she has built a great
rapport with many firms who really value her expertise and communication to
keep things progressing. For Jo it really is a two-way street where everyone is
trying to achieve the same goal so communication is key.
Jo’s favourite thing about her job is when she gets to call
clients and tell them the good news of completion and client’s happiness is
paramount to Jo. Jo is currently competing for the LFS Awards ‘Conveyancer of
the Year’ and client satisfaction is a key part in how the awards are judged. We
are all keeping our fingers crossed for her for a win! To date, Jo’s proudest moment
is when she won ‘student of the year’ whilst studying by achieving the highest
mark overall by any other student on the course that year.
Jo’s biggest role model is her dad, who worked as a Managing
Director for many years. Her dad really taught her about work ethic and how to
carry herself professionally. Most of all he taught her to treat people how you
would like to be treated, which we believe is why so many of her clients are
happy and come back to her time and time again.
In her downtime from work Jo loves nothing more than
holidaying and her favourite place for relaxing is Aruba where she hopes to
visit again and for a more adventurous holiday you can’t beat Vegas. Alongside
spin class and relaxing with friends, Jo enjoys spending time with her grandson
who is currently just over 18 month’s old, he keeps her on her toes that’s for
We are delighted to have Jo on board and she looks forward
to welcoming clients old and new to our firm for many years to come.

John M Lewis & Co have just become certified with Cyber Essentials. This gives us a nationally recognised standard for cyber security and helps reassure our clients that we are working towards securing our IT against cyber attacks, among other things!
Cyber Essentials aims to help organisations implement basic levels of protection against cyber attack, demonstrating to their customers that they take cyber security seriously.
The five basic controls within Cyber Essentials were chosen because, when properly implemented, they will help to protect against unskilled internet-based attackers using commodity capabilities – which are freely available on the internet.
Organisations that undertake Cyber Essentials are encouraged to re-certify at least once a year and, where appropriate, progress their security.
Since 1 October 2014, Cyber Essentials became a minimum requirement for bidding for some government contracts https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/procurement-policy-note-0914-cyber-essentials-scheme-certification
